frequently asked questions

Do I need a referral?

A referral is not necessary for private speech-language therapy services.

Do I need a comprehensive evaluation?

A comprehensive evaluation includes informal and formal measures of speech and/or language. Many times, this is not necessary. Your child is more than a test score; standard scores and percentile ranks tell us little about the whole picture. We can accept a recent school evaluation and/or complete an informal assessment prior to starting therapy.

Where are services provided?

Our clinic is conveniently located in East Brunswick, NJ. Services may be offered at home or in the community on a case by case basis.

What does “neurodiversity affirming” mean?

Neurodivergence refers to individuals without a “typical” brain (e.g., autism, ADHD, dyslexia). Neurodiversity-affirming therapists accept your child’s unique differences. We focus on your child’s strengths. We do not consider their sensory or communication differences as “deficits” that need to be “fixed.”

What is gestalt language?

There are two ways of developing language: analytic language development and gestalt language. Analytic language is the “bottom up” approach that we are likely more familiar with: a child learns single words, combines two words, and forms phrases and sentences. Gestalt language development is seen as more of a “top down” approach: the child learns language in strings or “chunks”, and we have to break it down so the child realizes each word can be isolated.

The special education process is overwhelming. Can you help?

We have experience working in a public school. We can help advocate for your child, including training your child’s school team on neurodiversity affirming practices. We can also attend IEP meetings as requested. Please note that participation in meetings (in-person or virtual) will be prorated at 2/3 of our hourly session rate.

Can you work with my child if they already get speech therapy at school?

Yes, of course. Given your consent, we are happy to collaborate with your child’s school team/therapists.

Can I drop my child off and come back when the session is over?

You are welcome to drop your child off or stay for the entire session. If you are dropping your child off, please allow for 5-10 minutes at the end of every session to address progress, recommended strategies, and questions/concerns.
